Finding the best newborn photographer for you and your growing family can be so challenging. But with a few things to think about during your search, a little research can ultimately become the best long-term relationship for tons of memories of your family that last a lifetime.
So here are some things to consider in your search for your family’s newborn photography.
Experience of your newborn photographer
I feel like this should go without saying, but find an experienced photographer to work with you during this time in your life. I know, I know, people have to start somewhere. Yes, this is true, but you don’t want a green photographer to work with your fresh new baby. Period. And an experienced newborn photographer also understands that this is a super vulnerable time for moms as well (ummmm… those hormones are the real freaking deal.)
You will want to look for someone with experience with babies, understanding, patience, and awareness of how YOU (I’m looking at you, mom) are feeling and confident in their ability to capture this special time in your lives.
Style of photography
Do their STYLE and aesthetic match with what you are hoping for from your newborn session? So, you really should think about what you want. Do you want just the baby, perfectly posed in a studio? Or do you want a relaxed in-home session where the parents (and any other family members) are in your photos as well?
Every photographer is different, has a different style–some are clean and simple, some use tons of props. Some are more documentary and capture the good, the bad, and the ugly real-life times in your home with a newborn, or others will coordinate and gently pose your family in your home. Regardless of the style photographer you choose, you should trust and feel confident that they can capture these fleeting moments exactly how you envision.
This leads me to…
Why are you getting newborn photos?
How will you use your newborn photos? Announcements? A baby book? A lifestyle or documentary session may easily lend itself to an album of your memories. A posed newborn session may lend more towards announcements. These decisions will help guide you in finding your perfect newborn photographer.
Also, many photographers will offer some sort of colleciton or package that will document your new babie’s first year of life. Like the yearbook club I offer my clients. Where I come to my client’s homes 3 times in your baby’s first year and document you as proof you survived this stage in your life, and you take home an album of the entire year as my gift to you.
A relationship of trust and, ultimately, a photographer your family is comfortable with is a great long-term goal. Your family is relaxed because you have worked with your photographer year after year. Your photos genuinely tell your family’s story because you are comfortable. You know what to expect, and it is more consistent than switching photographers year after year. On top of that, you don’t need to stress about finding a family photographer because your newborn photographer grows with your family. YAY!
I would love to meet you and your growing family one day. And, if you think I’m your perfect newborn photographer, let’s set up a time to chat!
