Family Photos Are Meant to Be Printed

I hope that you are never in this position. But, since you are here reading this, you won’t need to worry! In short, print your family photos. Unfortunately, I hear this story more than I would like to. But there is a great solution! Here goes…

So, you have just gotten your gallery of beautiful family photos back from your photographer. They are stunning, and you are beyond excited. You probably open and stare at your gallery 10,000 times the first day. You quickly download a few of your favorites to share on social media with all your friends. Then download your images to a thumb drive to “save forever.” 

You may visit your gallery a few more times to download a few more, but then life happens, and time passes.

Why didn’t I save my family photos to the cloud?

Fast forward 5 years, you remember a photo that your family photographer took, and OH NO!, you can’t find the dang thumb drive you saved them to…you moved, you had kids, not to mention– who the hell keeps a thumb drive in a special place for 5 years?! You scramble and ask your photographer if they still have it. 

I’m going to preface this with…this is not meant to be a downer story…just a reminder and solution for you NOT to experience this. 

Okay, back to the story. So, what does the photographer say? “Unfortunately, I no longer have that specific photo from 5 years ago. I only keep my clients photos for 1 year.” 

While you may be frustrated by your photographers response, it is not your their responsibility to archive your images. Personally, I would need a server farm in the arctic to keep all my client’s photos backed up forever. We are assuming that our clients…who have invested in their family memories have backed up their images.

Drives fail. Technology lets us down. Most photographers will keep for at least 1 year, but I always recommend to download and save right away – while it’s fresh in your mind.

Here’s the solution. Well, actually, there are a couple. 

1. Back up your images. There are great, free, cloud based storage solutions like Drop Box, Google drive, icloud…you get the deal. So take your thumb drive of images and put them in the safe, just like that fancy jewelry!
2. PRINT YOUR PHOTOS! I know that it is a broken record from every photographer on the planet…Print your photos! Well, this is just one small reason why. You still have photos of your grandmother when they were little, right? And your parent’s childhood photos? How fun is it for you to hold those images? And the stories that come with asking your loved ones about those photos. Call me cliche, but you want your kids to be able to do this same exact thing. PRINT YOUR FAMILY PHOTOS!
