Choosing outfits for your family photos can be a little stressful. It doesn’t have to be. With these 3 foolproof steps, you’ll be on your way to a beautifully styled family session. AND they will scream “this is us” as well!

Step 1:

Think about the location for your family photos.

Your location can help to guide you in your color choices. Things to consider–what colors will be around you? At the beach, there will be sand, grasses, and blue/green water. While at a park in the summer, there will be mostly greens. See where I’m going with this? Your surroundings become color in your photos! Make sure your outfits mesh with the colors of your surroundings. I know you are probably thinking…well how in the hell do I know how to do that?! Stay tuned for step 3!

Step 2:

What is your “vibe”?

This basically is–what are you most drawn to? What outfits do you wear that you are most comfortable in? (No mom, not your lulu’s and tank). More like are you boho, casual, hipster, classic, minimalistic…etc. What’s in your closet already? Is there any common theme? If you had to take all the “momiforms” out of your closet…what would YOU gravitate towards? For me its dresses with bold prints. Or a pair of overalls. Something easy and comfortable. Also, think about your home. What is your vibe at home? Are your minimalistic, classic, modern? For family photos, I would coordinate with that (If you have intentions of using your photos for wall art).

Step 3:

What is your color palette?

Color may be the most important factor in your outfit choices. Let’s start out with a visual of the color wheel:

If we start with a base color then we choose the other colors.

Now instead of choosing other colors all willy nilly, let’s make sure the colors work well with each other.

Here’s how (this is super simplified because I am no color theory expert):

Analogous colors: These colors are a combination of a base color and the colors on either side on the color wheel. For example- Blue, Blue-Green and Blue-purple

Complimentary colors: Complimentary colors are the colors on the opposite side of the color wheel from one another.

Monochromatic colors: Choosing shades of the same color. (along the same plane in the color wheel)

Now, once you choose a color have fun. Experiment with patterns, textures, and prints with everyone. But, mom, choose your outfit first and select everyone else’s around yours.

To see more examples of types of color patterns or to create your own color pallette, head over to the Adobe color wheel. Its super fun and helpful! Or, for my clients–I provide a one stop shop outfit coordinating service that will guide you easily through this process. I’m all about living that stress free life.
