You’re expecting a little one and want newborn photos. Yay! Now, when to schedule your newborn photographer? It really depends on what kind of photos you want!
Posed vs. Lifestyle Newborn Photos
There are generally two types of newborn photos: posed in a studio OR in-home lifestyle photo sessions. Posed photos are going to be for brand new sleepy babes bundled in blankets and baskets. Lifestyle newborn photos are going to generally be done in your home and include mom and dad and any other kids you have at home (your fur babies are always welcome!).
Get Them Scheduled in Your Second Trimester
For either type, you should initially reach out to a newborn photographer in your second trimester. This allows you to get it on the calendar before the business of your third trimester sets in, and ensures that your dream photographer isn’t already booked up!
Two Weeks Old for Posed Newborn Photos
Thinking of going the posed route? You’ll want to schedule these photos to be taken around 2 weeks of age. (Of course you won’t be able to exactly predict the perfect date to book, but getting an approximate date range on the calendar with your photographer early is great)! For posed newborn photos, you want your baby to still be fully in the sleepy squishy stage so that we can bundle and pose them without them getting fussy.
Two-Three Months for Lifestyle Newborn Photos
If you’re leaning towards lifestyle photos, I recommend waiting until your baby is between 2-3 months old. At this time you’ll understand whatever schedule they have a little better, and they’ll be a little more alert and interactive.
Book a Bundle!
Many photographers offer portrait bundles that include multiple sessions, which could include maternity, newborn, and milestone photos. So don’t hesitate to reach out early, and don’t forget to budget for this investment. You’ve got a lot of things to buy for baby, so spread that out! I call my bundle the Year Book Club. Check it out!
